Portugal ill fate : Fabio Coentrao and Striker Hugo Almeida out of FIFA world cup

Portugal full-back Fabio Coentrao and Striker Hugo Almeida are going to miss rest of the FIFA World Cup after suffering injuries in match against Germany.

Fabio Coentrao was forced off after 65 minutes of the game when he got a muscle pull while stretching to keep the ball in play. Coentrao was carried off on a stretcher with his hands covering his face.

Striker Hugo Almeida, who lasted only 28 minutes in Salvador, also suffered a first grade tear in his left hamstring. Portugal’s team doctor Henrique Jones confirmed both players would be sidelined for “more than 10 days” and would miss the remaining group matches against the USA and Ghana.

Coentrao has shown his deep sorrow for not being able to play for rest of the world cup by saying, “I’m afraid that my World Cup has come to an end. I think it’s a serious injury, though I hope it’s not. These things happen in our profession and, unfortunately, today it fell to me. It’s a very sad day, one of the saddest of my life. But this is just a game and despite the heavy defeat, we can still go through to the next round.”
