Diego Simeone first signed Atletico as coach in 2011. Over the years he has become the most successful manager for Atletico. Under his surveillance the team won the UEFA Europa League in his first season. He also helms the team to win UEFA Super Cup (2012) , Copa del Rey (2013) and led the team to a third place finish in 2012–13 La Liga, the club's best finish in the competition since winning it in 1996.
Simeone is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in European football, and was reported to have been linked with a number of clubs. His decision of sacking a deal as Atletico manager until 2020 is a bonanza for the club. Atlético greeted the announcement with a banner of Simeone dominating their website and the hashtag #Simeone2020 celebrating his renewal.
The club president, Enrique Cerezo congratulated Simeone by saying: “Nobody embodies the values of our club more than Simeone."
